Why Atami's fireworks are special

Atami Bay is surrounded on three sides by hills, like a bowl. The sound echoes off the hills, and the fireworks burst right above the sea. Atami holds shows in every season, not only in summer, so you can enjoy fireworks in the cool, clear air of late autumn and winter.

Tips for watching

  • Watch from the waterfront around Atami Bay. If some areas are closed on the day, please follow the organizer's and staff's guidance.
  • Find a place to stand before the show starts. The show is 20 minutes.
  • It is cold and windy by the sea at night in November and December. Bring a warm coat, gloves and a hat.
  • Trains and taxis around Atami Station are busy right after the show. Decide how you will get back before it starts.

Where to stay: a quiet inn on the Izusan Shrine approach

If you want to see the fireworks and also have a calm night away from the busy center, stay in Izusan, the neighborhood just north of central Atami. 123 MUSIC & RESORTS is a small music inn on the stone-stair approach to Izusan Shrine:

  • Five rooms only, and every room has a sea view
  • Two grand pianos (available until around 8:00 p.m.)
  • Room only (no meals are served): eat in town or buy dinner near Atami Station before you come
  • Check-in from 3:00 p.m., check-out by 10:00 a.m.
  • No parking at the inn (please use parking near Atami Station)

An honest note again: you cannot see the fireworks from our rooms. Watch them on the waterfront, then take a taxi back to the quiet of Izusan. How to get here: Getting here.

November 23: fireworks and Niinamesai on the same day

November 23 is Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan, and the day of Niinamesai, the harvest thanksgiving festival held at shrines across Japan, including Izusan Shrine. Visit the shrine during the day and watch the fireworks over the bay at night. Please check the shrine's own announcements for the ceremony and its times. Read more: What is Niinamesai?

Winter fireworks: December 6 and December 25

December 6 (Sunday) is the winter show near the end of the autumn-leaves season in Atami. December 25 (Friday) is Christmas night. The show is 20 minutes, so you can have dinner in town first and still be back at the inn early. For New Year at Izusan Shrine, see Where to stay near Izusan Shrine.
